Determination of total volatile organic compounds in printed matter by thermal desorption-gas chromatography

Abstract：Volatile organic compounds released from full volume printed matters were collected by PVF bag, and determined by thermal desorption-gas chromatography. The printed sample was placed in a sealed PVF sampling bag filled with high purity nitrogen, after being placed at 35℃ for 12 h, Tenax-TA sampling tube and sampling bag were connected in series with a sampler, the air in the bag was passed through the sampling tube, and the organic compounds released from the sample were adsorbed on the adsorbent of the sampling tube. The contents of volatile organic compounds in sampling tubes were determined by thermo desorption-analytical gas chromatography. Benzene, toluene, o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, ethylbenzene, butyl acetate, styrene and n-undecanone were quantified by external standard method, and other substances were quantified as toluene. The recovery of the method was 74.4%-91.1%, and the relative standard deviation of determination results was not more than 10%(n=9). The sample collection is more similar to the real life, which can provide data for evaluating the impact of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from printed matter, and provide new ideas for related evaluation.
